Gentle flows the brook
over soft falls of hidden
rock rounded by time

So much goes over those rocks, it’s no wonder they are rounded by time. Great picture, Stuart!

Aye, the stream has run for centuries, Barbara. And the underlying bed of sandstone mixed with ironstone provides a sturdy grounding. But, as you say, water is a determined smoother of all it flows across.

This takes me back to my youth! I have fished in many small streams like this. One of the last times I was 6 months pregnant with my first child, and the highlight was landing in the stream and walking out several miles soaking wet. My Doctor was horrified, but my Mother and I laughed ourselves silly. There are many streams like that to pick fiddleheads. They are wonderfully sweet greens and to me a delicacy. Thanks for posting.

Ah, youth revisited, Brenda. I, too, recall playing in such small waterways. We used to catch freshwater crabs and minnows and sticklebacks. Wonderful days!
