Lovely Stuart. When you expand this photograph to be really large it looks as if one very large brown leaf is holding on in the middle. This is the only one. Amazingly strong willed that leaf is indeed. Love to you and Valerie. You two have a blessed and fun weekend. ❤️🤗🌹

Thanks, Joni. I think it’s the beech leaf you’ve identified. Not particularly big, but much closer to the lens than the large tree behind! Young beech trees tend to keep their autumn leaves in place to protect the growing buds of the next year’s spring. They’re rather lovely en masse as they give the forest a wonderful russet glow.

And we’re blessed with beeches of every age from last year’s naturally sprouting saplings through to giants over 200 years old!

Thanks, Joni. I will. And you and Scott enjoy your life together, too.
The forest is a working forest, planted to provide timber. But it is well managed, and employs a long-term view of life, so very many trees are left to grow for their natural full lives. Unfortunately, there are a few diseases now attacking some species, mostly as a result of climate change. So we have a condition called ‘ash die-back’ which can slowly kill the ash trees. The forestry commission is currently removing all the sick versions of this species where they are close to roads, as they could fall almost any time and cause accidents. We witnessed them at this work this morning on our walk. The machinery they use is awesomely efficient! At least, with this species, it won’t cause large areas of loss, just odd trees here and there.

I am sorry to here of any old trees dying Stuart. It sounds like they are responding with accuracy and care. I am delighted to hear that as they are such beautiful trees. Thank you for sharing this it is very interesting. I wonder if we would do anything in the US if it happened here. I would like to think we would. Love to you both. Stay safe and well. 🤗🤗🦋
