Friar’s Crag & Strandshag Bay.
After our clockwise boat trip around Derwentwater, we had a break for lunch at Treeby’s Café on Lake Road. It’s a lovely eating place sited on the ground floor beneath the Treeby and Bolton Gallery, accessible either through the gallery or via the entrance on Lake Road.
We then returned to the lakeside to take a look at Friar’s Crag, a small promontory overlooking the lake and Strandshag Bay and giving distant views of the jaws of Borrowdale.

Friar’s Crag with the jaws of Borrowdale in the distance is one of those views that photographs never quite hold onto — you have to be standing there. And a gallery with a café underneath it is exactly the kind of lunch stop that saves a walking day when there are tired legs in the group. Off to read the rest.

Yes, photographs of beautiful scenery can only ever be pale by comparison with the realities, Travelling Taylors. But they do create lasting memories and, of course, provide potential inspiration to those who’ve never had the fortune to visit the place itself.

Friar’s Crag is such a good payoff for a short walk – that view down toward the jaws of Borrowdale never really loses its effect. Lunch at Treeby’s under the gallery before heading back to the lakeside sounds like a well-planned afternoon. Derwentwater by boat first, then on foot, is the right order.
