As an author, I’ve been present at conventions where selling books was part of the purpose and I was involved with such sales, which included some of my own books. I signed copies, spoke to readers, and even took part in onstage discussions between authors and audience. They were great occasions. Unfortunately, due to a combination of Covid and some personal problems for the organiser and sponsor, these events ceased some years ago.
But a short time ago I was made aware of a small book fair due to take place at a local village/small town. You can read the rest of this account free on Medium here.

I’ve only done one (small) book fair which sort of worked. At least I more than covered my costs, too. And I agree – collaring people as they pass and getting them talking was the best gambit!

I think it was worth the effort of preparation and attendance, Mick. But it’s certainly not a way to make a living! Good to meet readers and other writers, of course.

Yes, I’d do it again, but only if it was comparatively local. I don’t think I’d put in that effort if it was a long way away.

Agreed, Mick. Not worth travelling for.

Hi Stuart,
I'm just curious about your book fair activities, and so forth. I heard that nowadays, this sort of work, aside from your actual content writing, is actually more time consuming. Do they, by any chance pay you for it? (Or am I just being naive?)
Cheers!

I had to pay a small sum for the table (it was run by a local charity). But anything I made from selling my books, which more than covered my costs, I was able to keep.
