#ScenicSaturday September 7th 2024

This continuing series of posts depicts our beautiful world, encouraging people to share them and maybe even help save our unique home planet from human carelessness and indifference.

Today’s photo was taken on a trip to Italy to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary in 2018. We were staying in the small town of Stresa, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, and decided to take a trip up the mountains in the cable car. It was a fascinating ride, giving views initially over the town and then the mountain itself, and the lake. At the top, some 4,982 feet (1,491m) above sea level, the views were spectacular as we gazed over the mountains towards Switzerland, France, and the eastern ranges in Italy.

Unfortunately, the transport no longer runs following a disaster in 2021 when a cable car with 15 people aboard plummeted to the ground!

We were obviously very lucky to take the ride when it was open and still safe. Fortunately, for those who wish to visit the place, it’s possible to drive up to the original landing station. The road is steep and full of sharp bends, but apparently very worthwhile!

This view was actually taken on our walk down the mountain, which we chose to make instead of riding back to the town. It was a fair distance from the landing point to the town, and parts are quite steep. But it was a walk surprisingly reminiscent of some of our walks at home in the Forest of Dean, with many trees similar to those at home, and some of the tracks echoing those we use here. The weather, of course, was a lot warmer in Italy!

    1. Thanks, Lynette. As ever, there’s a sense of privilege in being able to be present in such places. Such views, paradoxically, present the world as both wide and varied and as small and fragile.
