This continuing series of posts depicts our beautiful world, encouraging people to share them and maybe even help save our unique home planet from human carelessness and indifference.
Today’s photo was taken in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and shows a landscape not far from the charming market town of Hawes. The drystone walls that delineate the fields can date back some 600 years, when they were constructed to keep wolves from the sheep, though the most reliable dates for many relate to the Enclosure Acts that place those recorded from the early 18th century.
The linear group of trees in the foreground run beside Gayle Beck. The hills in this area are often dotted with mature trees, and many of the farmhouses are sheltered from the winds by large trees.
The hilly area is much crisscrossed by footpaths and there are those who claim that the Yorkshire Dales provide the finest walking country in Europe. As a former resident of the area, I couldn’t possibly comment on that claim, but I can understand why the view might be held.

Beautiful photo, Stuart. The moody sky and the colours are arresting. I could watch this scene for a long time!

Thanks, Lynette. I’ve been enjoying your photos, too. Sorry I haven’t always been able to comment. This odd condition is rather draining me of energy, so I have to be sparing with my time and concentration!

Not to worry. Your first priority is to look after yourself. I hope you begin to feel better soon.

I agree – the Yorkshire Dales are splendid for walking. I could see sitting down on a blanket for a picnic on this hill, with that view!

We spent a couple of years living in this area, Noelle. Beautiful walks. My brother and his wife still live there, so we get to visit from time to time. Yes, sitting on the sheep-cropped grass and staring out into those hills in the natural silence of this landscape is definitely worth the effort.
