I think it’s a fairly ancient door, Brenda, relatively recently given a coat of gloss paint over a surface that hasn’t been treated beforehand! The door furniture would have been already in place.

I’ve seen these door knockers quite a few times in Europe and the UK, but I still find the disembodied hand hanging there a bit off-putting. Frankenstein’s door knocker? 😉
