Oddities Observed On Outings #15

In this continuing series I’m looking at things seen when out walking. Some of these objects will be familiar to certain readers, but many are likely to be unfamiliar to most. I’m presenting those that caught my attention perhaps by their unusual placing, incongruity, idiosyncrasy, or simply their oddness.

This one’s of an iron picture frame in the public Rose Garden in Florence, Italy. Or, judging by the carrying handle, is it a suitcase? I suspect it’s a clever combination of both, the point being to combine the idea of ‘taking a bit of Florence back home’ with the act of taking a photograph as that memory.

The unsuggested supposition is the photographer finds a suitable point of view to frame part of the city within the frame, thereby creating a ‘framed picture’.

Ideally, visitors to the garden keep clear of the frame to let others employ it for its intended purpose. But it seems tourists the world over are often far too self-absorbed to be aware of the needs of others. No matter, I took this shot to illustrate its purpose rather than to ‘frame’ my picture, as the large yellow cranes over the city centre rather detracted from the otherwise ideal medieval view available.
So, I place this here for other visitors to find when they visit that fascinating city.

    1. It is clever, Noelle. I look back on our time in Florence with mixed feelings. It suffers from over-popularity. Just too many tourists. The Uffizi was particularly trying; so many visitors all trying to obtain selfies in front of works of genius I merely wanted to look at in peace! But I’m still glad we made it. And our hotel, overlooking the river, was a real find by the travel agent.

        1. We were there for our 30th wedding anniversary, which falls at the end of September, so our fortnight in Italy spanned the last days of September and the first few of October, Noelle. The weather was lovely, and the crowds were slowly reducing.

    1. We’ve got a result that will hopefully put the Conservative Party out of politics for a very long time, Denise. But, in my area, there were almost as many votes for our useless, self-serving, career politician Conservative as there were for the Labour candidate who managed to unseat him. It says a lot about some people that they can ignore the realities of politicians simply because they are entrenched in either tradition or ignorance of the facts and will still vote for someone who has done them no good. I, too, hope your election results in a restoration of sanity to the US political scene. Trump is a known liar, rapist, convict, and law-breaker. How anyone could want such a vile man as their representative to the world, as their ‘leader’ is beyond me. He has all the charm of Hitler, who, after all, managed to convince his nation that he was the man to save them from whatever they believed was their national problem. And, therein lies the real issue: the ability to suspend rational thought and believe something so patently untrue that the facts make no difference to opinions held, eh?
