In this continuing series I’m looking at things seen when out walking. Some of these objects will be familiar to certain readers, but many are likely to be unfamiliar to most. I’m presenting those that caught my attention perhaps by their unusual placing, incongruity, idiosyncrasy, or simply their oddness.
This one shows… On this occasion, I’m leaving it to visitors here to identify what you’re looking at in this picture. Please make a comment below and I’ll respond and, eventually, reveal the answer. Have fun!

A piece of railway line, perhaps refashioned as a gate?

That’s an interesting reply, Roz. Not because it’s accurate, but because the railway reference has some relevance!

Looks like a block and tackle to me.

Spot on with the block and tackle, but where is it lodged, thaustin?

Looks like it’s lodged in coal.

That’s interesting, thaustin. It’s actually lodged in the bark of a living oak tree. But the ground around this tree is littered with small fragments of the coal that was once mined in the area.

Could it be some kind of gear or police system that the tree grew over?

You’re in the right ball park, Noelle, but definitely only on the edge there.

I have no idea, Stuart. It looks like a fishing reel lodged in a hole to be easily retrieved while on the way to a salmon river. 😉

Interesting, Lynette, but not accurate, I’m afraid.
