This short series of posts, relating to places of interest in the English County of Wiltshire, is intended to help visitors know what to expect. I’m not presenting any real details of history, etc., simply describing as well as I can, with the aid of photographs, how to get there and what you might see. There are links to more informative sites for each place listed.
What is Silbury Hill? In a nutshell, it’s the largest prehistoric artificial hill in Europe.
Where is it? Just under a mile south of Avebury, off the A4 between Beckhampton and West Kennett. Map here.
The best views are from just beyond the official car park situated on the left as you travel along the A4 from Beckhampton toward West Kennett. Members of English Heritage can park free, other visitors can pay the current £2 fee payable by text. There’s room for about a dozen cars, no coaches. The short path takes you from the car park to the edge of the field where the mound is situated. The ground here can be quite soggy after rain. You cannot approach any nearer, and you most definitely must not climb the hill.

A slightly more distant view is possible from a tiny lay-by on the B4003, situated on the left as you approach Avebury. There’s room for about 4-5 cars here. You view the hill from the edge of the road over open countryside.

What an amazing site – it just pops up. Have they done a LIDAR investigation to find out what’s in it?

There has been extensive exploration here over the decades, Noelle, including three attempts to reach the very centre, where any burial is likely to be located, but nothing has ever been found other than the layers of different materials that were used to build the hill over a long period. It remains a mystery. Perhaps it was some very early tribal leader’s vanity project!
