#ScenicSaturday 16th December 2023

My photos in this continuing series show our beautiful world in the hope they’ll encourage viewers to share them and help save it from human carelessness.

I normally post pictures taken in the month concerned in these series, but I’m ignoring December as it can be rather dull here. I have, however, kept to the UK this time. You’ll find pictures from England and Wales (I last visited Scotland, the Isle of Skye, around 1975, and my single trip to the Emerald Isle was to Northern Ireland as a press photographer, around 1973, both long before digital images arrived).

Today’s photo shows a part of the rocky coastline in North Devon. We visited here more than 12 years ago and found this small beach deserted. There was an unsightly caravan park higher up, invisible from the point where this shot was taken.

I found the ancient wooden post driven into the sand at the edge of the sea quite fascinating. What was its purpose? How long had it been there? Was it still used, perhaps as a place to moor a small boat? Questions I shall probably never have answered. In fact, it’s possible the post has now been eaten by the hungry sea, who knows? But I thought I’d share the photo with you as an example of an unspoiled coastal area, the type of place that’s rapidly disappearing under constant commercial development of our shores.

More of my pictures appear in the Gallery.
If you’re looking for pictures for almost any purpose, you’ll find 2,500 large HD images on Picfair, which can be bought for a small sum as digital files, or as art quality prints on paper or canvas. My small portion of the fee helps maintain the gear and software quality digital photography demand. Thank you.
