#ScenicSaturday 11th November 2023

My photos in this continuing series show our beautiful world. Maybe they’ll encourage viewers to help save it from human carelessness.

As I rarely travel in November, this month’s series will concentrate on the forest where I live. Those who love the seas or oceans may feel a little left out, so I’ll try to compensate for that next month!

Today’s shot is taken on a trail my wife and I use almost daily to walk very many different routes through the Forest of Dean from our home, without needing to drive anywhere. This is autumn, when the deciduous trees change colour and drop their leaves onto the tracks, making the more solid paths a little softer and quieter underfoot.

We watch the squirrels gathering beech nuts, acorns, and sweet chestnuts to stash away for winter. Sometimes, we see resident Buzzards and Goshawks as they wheel across the ever-changing sky in search of a meal. And the sound of songbirds, diminished as the breeding season is well over, still occasionally breaks the silence. It’s usually quiet enough for us to hear the small streams rushing down the hills as they drain the forest of fallen rain, and distant sounds from other humans and their dogs as they lead their lives here.

Sometimes, it’s so peaceful we can imagine we’re the only ones left alive in the world.

  2. We had to keep to as many level paths as possible, Noelle. But it’s impossible to walk far in the forest without encountering hills. Fortunately, we know the area well enough to make our longer walks as easy as possible. We were both pretty tired when we returned, but we do walk every day to keep ourselves physically and mentally as fit as possible.

    1. We walked through here again this morning, Noelle. It’s even more colourful after the first frost. On a five mile walk we met only half a dozen other people. Very peaceful.
