My photos in this continuing series show our beautiful world. Maybe I can encourage viewers to help save it from human carelessness. Today I give you a shot taken on Lake Maggiore in Italy in September 2018, when we celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary. We’d booked our tickets for the voyage at the office in Stresa, expecting to have an excursion around the extensive lake. Unfortunately, some of the information between ourselves and the lady working in the office was lost in translation, we’d learned only some basic Italian, and what we actually got were tickets for the ferry round trip, which visits a number of the towns and villages around the shore.
No matter, we enjoyed our views of the various stopping places. Around lunch time the boat stopped for an extended stay at Locarno in Switzerland. We had no passports with us and weren’t sure of our legal status if visiting that country, as it’s not in the EU. So, we stayed in our seats until hunger and thirst drove me down to the bar for sustenance. The crew were sitting around one of the tables, enjoying their lunch. They seemed rather alarmed at my sudden appearance, and I learned the boat was not insured for passengers while resting in port, so we were obliged to leave it.
I’d never been to Switzerland, but Valerie had visited as a schoolgirl. We wandered the lakeside for a while and asked a local couple for some information about the time zone, as the clock we could see seemed to be out of kilter with our own devices. They, of course, spoke perfect English and let us know the clock, in a country rather renowned for its production of accurate timepieces, was wrong!
We sauntered back to the ferry and took new seats on the upper deck. I collected food and drink once we were underway again. The boat made the return trip visiting all the places we’d seen on our way out. The sun was beginning to set over the distant mountains as we approached Stresa, where we would land in time for our dinner at the hotel and I took this photograph shortly before we docked.

Great gorgeous photo. And now you would have the Google Translate app on your phone to help you converse!

Thanks, Noelle. I didn’t have a smart phone at the time. Haven’t tried the ‘translation’ feature, but, yes, it may well have helped! No problem, though, we enjoyed the result of our mistake.

It’s a great app. I used it to ‘talk’ for two days to my daughter-in-law’s father who speaks only Italian.

Thanks, Noelle. I’ll give it a try next time the situation needs it.

My iPhone seems to offer the service as a matter of course. I haven’t tried it, but I’ll remember your advice when I need it, Noelle. Thanks.
