My photos here show how beautiful is our world. I hope to encourage viewers to help save it from our carelessness. Today we bathe under the warm glow of a sunset on the historic Greek island of Crete. It was taken on a spontaneous trip organised by the husband of our hotel owner, who suggested a small taverna for dinner, situated at the top of the nearest mountain and noted for its views at sunset. He wasn’t wrong. The journey up the winding narrow roads, with thirteen passengers in a people carrier designed for eleven, was a little hairy, but he stopped enroute so we could picture the surrounding scene before the sun set. The meal was excellent, made largely with ingredients from the driver’s farm and owned by his brother. This shot was taken between the main course and dessert, when I left the table to capture the orange globe sinking behind a distant promontory. A memorable evening. I spent the downhill journey in the luggage compartment (with no lid, I’m happy to report), so one of the women could be seated without having to occupy the lap of a stranger. One of those events that would never happen in England but was relatively commonplace on that special island.
