I totally agree with you that the ultra-rich did not do it on their own. They should, for no other reason than humanity, pay their workers a living wage. AND they should pay their fair share of the cost of infrastructure that they use to gain their ultra status. I do not begrudge them having the amount of wealth just the ability to bypass the contribution to Police, Firefighters, teachers, and healthcare workers that we all need.

I’d go a lot further, Brenda. It’s bad for the world economy that some have excessive wealth as they are totally incapable of ever spending that sort of money, so contribute very little to economic activity. Also, wealth under the capitalist system, inevitably means the more one individual has, the less others have. Ultra wealth becomes a form of theft from the pockets of the world in general. And no one, ever, has been ‘worth’ thousands of times more than any other individual. Money becomes addictive, like power, and in common with other addictions, the best treatment for sufferers is the removal of the addictive substance.

Are we talking about our own personal greed? We all have some greed in our little heart of hearts. Or the hoarders of the TP syndrome would not have happened. Or are we magnanimously talking about the unforgiving greed of those Billionaires and now Trillionaires? I do not believe it is wrong for them to make ALL the money they can, but I believe they should pay for the services, Police, Fire, Streets, etc. that they enjoy on the way to becoming rich. What should happen is our Representatives should be ashamed to take the black money from them to vote for the tax incentives that benefit them. They were hired (yes, Virginia we hired them when we voted them in office) to look after our interests. We should fire them when they do not keep their promises and do their duty!

I was struck by this sign because the ‘by’ is obscured by the window frame, Brenda, allowing the message to read as ‘Let Greed’. Yes, we all have a small germ of greed inside us; it’s an essential evolutionary tool for the continuation of the species. But I can’t agree with you about billionaires and above. No one, ever, has been ‘worth’ that sort of wealth. We are all utterly interdependent. No one can make such sums on their own. What these wealthy elites forget is that it is the contribution in work, time, skill, talent, and intelligence of others that allows them to acquire their excessive wealth. Without the road builders, no one could travel. Without the cleaners, our cities, offices, factories would be uninhabitable. Without the educators, our children would remain ignorant. Without the miners we would have no minerals. I could go on, but I think the message is clear enough. As interdependent people it’s essential to our continued existence for us to value, and pay for, the work done by others to allow us the time to do what we wish to do. And no one, absolutely no one is worth the huge amounts these elites accrue. Since most of them are too mean-spirited to pay their workers their just deserts for their contributions, the only way we can create real justice is to tax these wealthy parasites as heavily as possible. Rant over.
