Drystone walls are a feature of the Dales, Lynette. Some are hundreds of years old. And the wooden gate is a device to keep the sheep in the field while allowing walkers access. In the typical way of the subsistance farmer, baling string is often used in place of metal devices as a means of keeping gates shut: it’s cheaper!

Those thaty require maintenance are gradually being rebuilt. But the work itself is both slow and physically demanding, and not many people now have the skills.
I need to build a very small one at the foot of my garden. Have to wait until my back’s a bit better, though!

Yes, I remember you telling me about the competitions that are meant to pass on the skills. When you’re ready to build your own, you will no doubt earn a number of very good dinners, completely guilt-free!
