My photos in these continuing series show our beautiful world with the aim of encouraging viewers to share them and help save our unique home from human carelessness.
I normally post pictures taken in the month concerned in each cycle, but I’m excluding December as it can be rather dull here in the UK. I have, however, kept to England and Wales for this group.
Today’s photo shows a sunset over the Worm’s Head peninsula, Rhossili, on the Gower Peninsula in south Wales. We were dining at the hotel on the cliffs here and I could see the sky changing through the window overlooking the bay. Valerie, my wife, is well used to the way the mind of a photographer works and she could see I was eager to get out there and capture the moment.
‘Go on, then. We can order our desserts when you come back. But pour me a glass before you go.’ I did.
The hotel grounds weren’t the ideal viewpoint, but in the time remaining before the glowing orb would disappear, I had little chance of finding a better place. And a quick exploration took me to the spot from which I framed this shot. As I reached the best location, the sun dropped momentarily into the gap between the cloud base and the far cloud on the horizon over the sea. This happy state remained only for a minute or so, but I was in the right place at the right time and came away with this shot and a few others.
Back in the restaurant, Valerie had chosen her desert and I quickly selected mine and caught the waiter’s eye so we could finish our meal together. Some partners would have made that whole event awkward, but we have the sort of relationship, based on mutual love, that allows our occasional eccentricities. This was during the week we celebrated 31 years of marriage.
The Gower is a beautiful place and I expect we’ll visit it again. If you haven’t been, and you have the opportunity, I’d definitely recommend it.

This is truly a classic shot Stuart.
I recall the opening to one of my favorite tv shows of the 70’s, KUNG FU, that also featured a memorable sunset shot –

Thanks, Glen. I’ve never seen ‘Kung Fu’, but you’re right about that memorable sunset.

What a beautiful spot. I’ve learned to let Photo-Op Pop take all the pictures he wants!

Thanks, Noelle. Always wise to give the photographer fairly free-reign, eh?

We have the same sort of relationship. It’s often me jumping up I’m the middle of things to get a good shot of something. He’s OK with it. Happy New Year to both of you. A great photo!!

Good to know, Darlene. Photographers need partners who understand the need for action, eh? All the best for the New Year to you and yours.

He always lets me have the window seat for that reason. When we were in Amsterdam on a canal tour, I kept jumping from one side of the boat to the other to get the best shot, having to climb over him every time. He finally moved to another seat.
