Just a little alert for those who like castles and history: I was recently invited to do a post for a Museum site. I chose to do a post about Bolton Castle in North Yorkshire. You’ll find that post here, if you’re interested.

I knew Queen Mary had been imprisoned in Bolton Castle and had often wondered what it looked like. Thanks for the tour. It look quite habitable!

They did their best for her, but landowners, like everyone else at the time, never knew who might be in power in the future, so they felt it best to hedge their bets!

Thanks, Darlene. We generally seek out the historical buildings and sites when we travel, so I usually do a post or two on our return.

Great post, I loved visiting old castles when travelling in the UK. Loved the detail and information you put into it.

Thanks, Diane(?) I see you originate in Australia. Our daughter’s fiance is also an Australian and was fascinated by our castles when he visited the UK with her a couple of years ago. Glad you enjoyed the post.

I have fond memories of Bolton Castle. It does look rather better these days though than when I was last there. Great article, Stuart.

Thanks, Sue. Friends who live in Yorkshire have made similar comments about the past. Our short talk with the staff in the kitchen preparing for a private event suggested some substantial work had been done a short time prior to our visit (they must’ve heard we were coming, otherwise, what possible reason could they have had?). So it’s probably worth another visit once the restrictions are eased.

I will be heading north as soon as they allow it, Stuart. I want to see my moors again before I run out of time 🙂

We, too, will be back up north as soon as travel restrictions allow. The Dales and the Moors are such beautiful places.

Mine, too, Sue. I was born in Hull and we lived for a time in Settle. They say the Yorkshire Dales is the finest walking country in Europe and I wouldn’t argue with that.
