RAGE!

How do you feel in the
presence of injustice
Do you rage at unfairness
Does inequality ignite your ire
Do you fume with fury
when you hear of a girl forced
early into marriage with an old man
when you learn of the boy denied
because his skin is another shade
when the killer is set free to kill again
when you see the waste discarded
when you witness excess damaging the world
when a man walks free as the jury says
the girl was raped for her short skirt
Does it make you feel enraged
when a gambler on the Stock Exchange
is paid a thousand times the wages of
the woman in the hospital who is daily saving lives
when you hear a politician promise you the Earth
knowing he will sacrifice the planet
just to further his career
Are you vexed by inequalities of wealth
knowing no man ever did a thing unaided
no one ever rose above the crowd without their help
Do you grow angry when you
learn some member of a club has many roles
but your willing neighbour cannot get a job
Are you mad at a world crammed full of
powerful feckless reckless
leaders who might do such good
but care only for their power and wealth?

I ask you all these questions
and if your answer is not yes
I wonder just what type of person you must be
And if you answer yes
I wonder what you do to change things

  1. Great poem, Stuart. Well said. We do our best. Re-cycle, buy local, our next vehicle will be electric. But the politicians. Yikes. Our PM is not too bad although … there’s always stuff. And I won’t weigh in on Trump. Canadians are beginning to become concerned that if he’s elected again, he may start trying to annex. So much for the world’s longest undefended border.

    1. It’s good that some of us do what we can to protect the environment, Lynette. One of the reasons I’m posting the daily pictures of natural beauty is to try to help people understand and respect it.
      As for Trump, the man’s a menace to the whole world. It’s a real puzzle how he’s managed to bamboozle so many American voters: one wonders how they can remain unaware of his dangerous narcissism and self-promoting actions. His latest episodes have surely shown everyone that his only concern is himself.

    Somehow, I can imagine you reading the paper or watching the telly when you learn of some idiotic injustice. I suspect it puts you over your daily limit of stupidity and injustice and you just have to let your frustration out. I’m glad you chose this manner. I’m willing to bet you heard about something B.J. and his cronies at # 10 want to do and it didn’t sit well with you.

    I can imagine you in front of your computer pounding on the keys to produce this poem. Anyone reading this can sense the Rage.

      And, yes, I was having my morning cuppa while watching the news on TV. It was actually a combination of the idiocy of Trump with his irresponsible antics over Covid 19 and a piece on the poor response to rape cases that raised my ire to the level where it was essential for me to let off steam!

  5. Amazing poem Stuart. I can feel the injustice and anger in the words. All true by the way and extremely poignant today. I am troubled by all these things myself and in awe of the way nothing seems to be changing nearly enough especially in the US. I and my husband do and have done many things to make a difference I hope. It takes everyone working towards a better tomorrow however. Thank you for this poem and it’s wonderful truth.       This was inspired whilst watching the TV news over our morning cuppa. So much unnecessary cruelty, injustice, prejudice in the world. I just had to let off some steam.
      It comes as no surpirse that you and your partner do what you can to make a positive difference.
      Together, we can make a difference.

We are just about where I believe Luce and Randal are about to meet. You are a really good writer. I love the way you set everything up and the personality of her droid.         1. Thank you, Joni. I’m really pleased you’re enjoying the book. I try to write character driven fiction, as that way the people are hopefully sufficiently engaging to allow readers to empathise. I also write as a pantster, which means I never plot. It makes the writing of the initial draft as exciting for me as I hope it does for the reader, but it means a lot of editing afterwards!

          1. Yes we are really enjoying your book. In fact my husband was just saying it was hard to believe that was your first book. Extremely engaging and so creative. Your writing and editing is very impressive. I just love Luce’s character. Interesting that you don’t plot. Well I am excited to get back into it today. You two have fun. It has really been cooling off here. It has been in the 70’s which is nice. It makes walking really nice. It was in the high 90’s most of the summer. Hope you two have some sunshine today.             1. Enjoy the read, Joni. My first novel was ‘Breaking Faith’, a romantic thriller set in my native Yorkshire during the drought and heat wave of 1976, which I recall very well. But The Methuselah Strain was an early scifi novella, which I initially self-published. My publisher loved it so much, he asked me to expand it very slightly (I inserted a short passage to add a little more drama), and then he published it both as an ebook and in hardback.
              We’ve had a lovely break from our autumnal rain here. Temps are down to around 52F, which is about average for October. Rain threatened overnight, and stong winds at the weekend, so we’re taking advantage and walked today and will again tomorrow morning before the next run of rain comes in!
