Today’s Pictures: 4 June 20

The River Wye, much of which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, flows along past the bottom end of the village. In summer, there are often canoeists paddling along on the current, in groups or separately.

Trying to brighten the day for those people isolated indoors during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Richard III’s castle in Middleham, North Yorkshire, as a thunder storm approaches. The ruins are well preserved and cared for. Worth a visit if in the area. This picture was taken in August 2012.

  2. Stonehenge was, the experts think, started around 3000BC and took around 1500 years to be completed as a stone monument. The Shard is a modern skyscraper built in London in 2012. I placed them as buildings of note at either end of our architectural history. Mind you, I don’t expect the Shard to be around in 5000 years, but I suspect Stonhenge will still be there!
    Definitely tell your friend her work is good enough to charge for, Joni. And maybe remind her she could be doing professionals out of their living, unless she’s just doing work for friends who would otherwise rely on other friends for the pictures, of course.

    1. So often in photography, as in life, Lynette, it’s a case of being prepared for the moment when it arrives. I took this whilst Valerie and I were on a walk with my brother and his wife, who live in the village. They all know my habits in taking pictures and stayed out of the way until I’d captured the shot I wanted. Luckily, we got back to their home before the rain started!

  5. Stuart the river is gorgeous and the castle is unbelievable. It has been preserved so well. I love the horses in front of the castle. Your photographs are amazing. I wish we preserved beautiful architecture in the US such a loss. Stuart, I have a favor to ask. Gabriela Milton is one of my favorite authors ever and she just wrote a best selling book for Vita Brevis Press. The name of the book is “Passions: Love Poems and Other Writings. It is a number one seller on Amazon all ready. Her site is shortprose on WordPress. She was gracious enough to feature me yesterday along with a poem I wrote. I was hoping you would visit her site, you won’t be disappointed her writing is so uniquely beautiful. The photograph was taken of me by a woman I know who does photography on the side. I set up the scene on my back porch to go with the poem. I was wondering if you would look at her work and see what you think since your work is so gorgeous, and you are a professional photographer.       Something I’ve noticed about the US and architecture is their habit of destroying to rebuild, rather than attempting to preserve. Of course, America is a ‘young’ country in terms of its current civilisation, though the native Americans would properly dispute that! Here, in UK, we have thousands of years of history encapusulated in our buildings – everything from Stonehenge to the Shard. Perhaps the US will better preserve its history in future?
      I visited Gabriela Milton’s site, and I’ve followed her. I also enjoyed your poem and I’ve tweeted that post. Your photographer is very good, but I couldn’t find anything online for her. She has talent and you should encourage her to display it.
      Francisco Bravo Cabrera is clearly a talented individual. I liked his most recent post, a moody gateway, which I also tweeted. Thanks for introducing him to me.
      And I found your own website, where I’ve also enjoyed and tweeted your latest poem.

      1. You are right about the US Stuart it is a shame how we demolish things that aren’t even old. When we lived in Seattle there was a sports arena that wasn’t even paid for yet and they tore it down and build a bigger one. Tax payers helped pay for that. You have Stonehenge in the UK which is unbelievably old. I believe it predates Moses. Amazing, as you mentioned. Builders cut down all the trees – old growth to make super large homes which no one really needs. It is sad. It is something that is so disappointing to me. You are 100 percent right about the native Americans as well. Stuart thank you for visiting the sites I recommended. I am excited to call my friend and tell her you thought her work was good. She does weddings and graduations all sorts of big events but doesn’t think she is good enough to charge. I will tell her what you said and she will be thrilled. So thank you.
